Recession...what recession?

It's a funny old world, isn't it? As the US faces a mortgage crisis and, in the UK, there are questions over Barclays' "liquidity" Selfridges opens their Wonder Room. As of today you can visit the 19,000 square foot, neo-clasically decorated space anytime the urge strikes for a £311,000 Tiffany & Co. necklace or a diamond-encrusted sink plunger by Chrome Hearts. Or, presumably, a one-off saddle from Hermes...like the one commissioned for Selfridges' window display.

Oscar Wilde said, "nothing succeeds like excess"...Selfridges seems to be betting that there are enough of the nouveau riche to make Wilde's words ring true.

    But much more comprehensively...

The books sound interesting but apart from that...

I'm assuming this will work on a novelty/hit-and-run concept and will only be open for a short period of time until the uber-rich have bought their toys.

I think it might stick around as an attraction for bringing in shoppers. People will come in to ogle the fabulous wonder room, and then they'll walk through the rest of the department store and pick up something a little more practical.

such cobblers from Selfridges. That Hermes saddle has been kicking around for ages! How do I know? We shot my (very attractive) assistant naked in a wig on the bloody thing for my (national newspaper) style magazine at least 18months ago.

    xx
